It is never too late to start gardening. What matters is only the choosing of the right kind of flowers. If you have a bit of knowledge about flowers (you do not need to be a botanist….. just like me), it is much easier to go ahead. No need to worry, even if you do not have any knowledge, I can always share mine with you.
You can go for Annuals and Perennials for the start which will provide a tremendous effect by the colors and shapes to your garden. I will inform you a bit about these plants so that you can choose easily which flower you would like to buy or collect. Annualsgenerally refer to plants which mostly last for only one year. Usually they are grown from seeds. However, it also covers some other varieties also. It will become too botanical if we start talking about them. So let’s come to the Perennials. They are usually regarded as plants which die completely or partially and use to reappear the following year.
You can plant the Annuals in small pots and can use for window sill decoration. I have a good collection of Fuchsia, Pansy, Rudbeckia, Chrysanthemum, Geranium, Petunia and Sweet Williams. I do not have a tough time managing it. I can suggest few flowers that you can collect like Calendula, Nemesia/Orange Prince, Begonia, Rose, Myosotis/Forget-me-not, Hibiscus Trionum and Foxgloves.
According to your choice and need you can choose these Annual plants from a wide range of variety. Depending on the soil type, colors, for fragrant, for scented foliage, for cut flowers, for dried flowers, for foliage only, for exposed and coastal sites and climbers, you can choose from more than ten to twenty different flower plants in each type.
For more defined color schemes and soil, you look out for Perennials. Yellow, orange, red, pink, blue, purple, violet, green and white- cream are the colors you can get there. Convallaria Majalis, Geranium Phaeum, Doronicum, Fireglow, Golden Chimes, Sunrise, Meconopsis are included in my favorites.
Perennials can be chose on the basis for dry shade or moist shade, for acid soil or alkaline soil or sandy soil or even for clay soil too. They can be use for ground cover as well just like the Annual plants it also has varieties to choose for fragrant, scented foliage, cut flowers, dried flowers, foliage, coastal and exposed sites, climbers as well as for architectural and hedges too.
I hope you will find a good start because I can bet you have a nursery close by to get these lovely flowers or you will start surfing for one nearby.
